The estimated strength of World Jewry today is little more than 13 million. We say "estimated" not just because of the traditional Jewish reluctance to count its people, but also because of the impossible task of reaching out to so many unaffiliated Jews in the Diaspora.
POPULATION BY REGION

When the children of Israel wandered in the desert, having escaped from Egyptian bondage, they were instructed by God in the Book of Exodus to count their rank and file by indirect means (through the half shekel coin which everyone deposited) so as to avoid the evil eye (which exists when Jews are counted) and the plague.
However, at the beginning of the Book of Numbers, the great commentator Rashi explains that God's love for his people was reflected in his continuous desire to count them.

This compilation on the Jewish Communities of the World, and the statistical information which it contains, has been produced out of love and concern for the Jewish People. We collected our data from demographic and other academic studies, community reports, and up-dates in the general media. We also consulted with experts to verify our findings before reaching our assessments and estimates. We would welcome comments, suggestions and corrections.
